Win The Lumberyard Magazine Roark Prize and have your poetry featured in an entire issue of The Lumberyard Magazine. Details here."ONE FAST MOVE OR I'M GONE" - POSTER October 21 2009
This might sound complicated but we're happy to mention The Firecracker Press was picked to design and produce the tour poster for the soundtrack to the film, "One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Kerouac's Big Sur." The film features folks like Tom Waits, Patti Smith, and Lenny Kaye among many others and documents Jack Kerouac's time in Big Sur.
The best part, however, is that Jay Farrar (of Son Volt) and Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie) teamed up to make a full length album for the film, and The Firecracker Press was commissioned to "do" posters for their tour. They'll be available at venues across the country, and at The Firecracker Press in good ol' St. Louis, Missouri.
The poster features a woodcut of a scene from the Big Sur coastline and measures 18" x 24". This is a limited edition (like everything we do) so get yours quick.
Don't know who any of the names mentioned above are? More info can be found HERE.
THE FIRECRACKER PRESS ON THE SMALL SCREEN October 07 2009
A few weeks ago we were contacted by the band, Finn's Motel, to let us know that a tour poster we'd made for them was going to be part of a television set this Fall. The show, called "Lie to Me," stars Tim Roth and aires Monday nights on Fox. The poster hangs in two places on the set; the wall and on the back of the door of the main character's daughter's bedroom. Thanks to Joe Thebeau, of Finn's Motel, for making this happen. Keep your ears open and hope you hear one of their singles on the show!
You can buy your own copy at our Cherokee store.

PRINT LEAGUE CALL FOR ENTRIES October 06 2009
SECOND ANNUAL CHEROKEE PRINT LEAGUE HOLIDAY SALE!
No longer taking submissions
Once again, galleries & businesses on Cherokee street are teaming up to showcase artists working with printed media for the Cherokee Print League Holiday Sale. The event will take place Saturday, December 5th from 10am-7pm. This indoor print-themed arts & craft sale will take place all along the street, with businesses hosting artists from all over the St. Louis area (as well as the greater midwest) whose work is print-related (printmaking, letterpress, screen printing, printed fabrics, anything printed goes!)
WE'D LOVE TO HAVE YOU PARTICIPATE!
This is organized as a sale rather than an art show, and we expect a huge turnout, so it would be a great way to make some cash before the holiday season. Last year, many hundreds of people turned up throughout the day to mosey along the historic shopping district and purchase the printed wares of local artists. Hosting businesses will be extensively advertising the event, and 100% of participation fees go toward advertising. You will be provided with a table in an indoor, heated space, and your name and location will be included on a map of the event that will be available the day of the sale.
DETAILS
Participation fee: $50 (tables can be shared, two artists for $25ea)
Students WELCOME: $35 solo or $25ea for shared table
Approximate Table Size: 3 x 5' with optional wall space (let us know if you're interested in some wall).
Advertising: Sauce Magazine/RFT, KDHX, handprinted posters by The Firecracker Press, Sleepy Kitty, and All Along Press
Afterparty: TBA (But, oh, there will be one!)
To reserve your table, register <a href="http://www.cherokeeprintleague.com">here</a> or drop of your fee (in cash!) to The Firecracker Press at 2838 Cherokee Street no later than NOVEMBER 1st.

THE FIRECRACKER PRESS - BEST OF ST. LOUIS October 01 2009
"We're happy to have been picked for this year's Riverfront Times "Best Of" issue in the category of "Best New Local Art Trend". We're listed with several other local print studios, all using printmaking in wildly different ways. They forgot to highlight studios like Lock & Key Press, Pele Prints, Porter Toleo, and Sleepy Kitty to name a few but they're right to recognize the wave of printing that's taking St. Louis by the nards. Thank you RFT!

Artist-run print shops
Cottage industry seems to be seeing a renaissance in St. Louis in the form of artist-run print shops, which are delivering fine, handmade goods out of small studios or neighborhood storefronts. Evil Prints, All Along Press, Rad Lab and the Firecracker Press are producing limited-run printed matter for an eager public, each in its own inimitable way. From Tom Huck's large-scale neo-Medieval triptychs (Evil Prints) to All Along's modus operandi of allowing members to make their own woodcuts, screen prints and letterpress pieces to the business cards, posters, calendars and other customizable fine-art ephemera offered by Rad Lab and the Firecracker Press (All Along, too), you can find more or less anything you're looking for at these singular enterprises that blend artmaking with classic entrepreneurialism. There's a lot of hope in these efforts: Despite all the ravages of the economy, a creative medium known to be difficult to practice beyond academy walls owing to its reliance on large-scale equipment is finding a sustainable home in this city. St. Louis should take pride in its love for this egalitarian medium that requires, above all, careful hard work, bootstrap ingenuity and a willingness to toil with others. See for yourself by paying 'em a visit; contact information is available via www.evilprints.com, www.allalongpress.com and www.firecrackerpress.com; Rad Lab can be reached through Amy Thompson at 206-459-1427.
THE FIRECRACKER PRESS & FINN'S MOTEL GO PRIMETIME! September 19 2009
Finn's Motel and The Firecracker Press Ready for Prime-Time TVBy Annie Zaleski in News of the RFT, StL
Wednesday, Sep. 2 2009 @ 3:42PM
Received a cool note from Joe Thebeau of Finn's Motel via Facebook a little bit ago. Seems that due to the kindness of one Heather Crist, a live show poster of FM -- printed by our very own Firecracker Press -- is part of the permanent set for the Fox series Lie to Me. Says Thebeau:
Our live show poster, created and produced by The Firecracker Press, has been added to the permanent set for Season 2. Specifically, the poster is in Dr. Cal Lightman's (Tim Roth) daughter's bedroom. Word has it that this part of the set should appear sometime around episode 3, but, we'll be watching all of Season 2 to try and catch a glimpse.

Someone in our office decided it'd be a great idea to to make commitments for, not one, but two art fairs this weekend. 3...2...1...BLAST-OFF September 03 2009
We just found out that we'll be designing and printing an 8.5" x 11" document that will be traveling into outer space. That's right! We were contacted by Washington University this week with a request to make a print containing an image of James S. McDonnell. He's the founder of McDonnell Aircraft Corporation, headquartered in St. Louis, and now known as Boeing. They just celebrated their 70th anniversary and the print we're making celebrates McDonnell's legacy. The print will be signed by astronauts, folded and stuffed into a bag, loaded onto the Shuttle, and launched at NASA HQ on September 15th.
We're printing on a 100% cotton, archival paper provided by Stephen Kinsell Fine Art Papers.

FIRECRACKER PRESS AUGUST EVENT July 23 2009
A MUST in AUGUST... Get up and get out to the Firecracker Press on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 to experience: THIS IS HOW MESSED UP STACKS UP! - the August REBUS Event! The Firecracker Press is a unique graphic design and letterpress print studio specializing in advertising and promotional campaigns, event posters, and limited edition products for clients large and small. Designs are transferred onto printable woodblocks that are carved by hand, ink is mixed by hand and fed, one by one, into our historic presses that are over 100 years old! The Firecracker Press is the only studio of it's kind in Missouri!
The man behind the curtain is the one and only Eric Woods: founder, owner, principal designer & printmaker of the Firecracker Press! Eric's past experience includes working in New York as a book jacket designer, as an Editorial Designer for a Missouri Newspaper, and as an Art Director for a St. Louis based advertising firm. He started The Firecracker Press with a longing to "get his hands dirty" and found the craft of letterpress printing to be a perfect marriage of art and design. His unique experiences with different aspects of the design and advertising worlds along with the perspective that comes from making what's produced at The Firecracker Press guides everything the studio creates.
Eric will speak on some "imPRESSING" subjects to start the evening that will surely get the wheels turning! After the "PRESSentation", the curtain will rise to PRINTING PRESS DEMOS! Matty Kleinberg, shop manager, will also be present demonstrating how to give the best PUNCH - stand by for a knock out! Leading to Michelle LeBeau with PR/Accounts.
Snacks and drinks will be available - roll in early and stay late for libations and vibrations! Plenty of street parking is available!
